Soillse is a carbon-neutral cohousing project of 6 owner-occupied houses and 3 rental flats (pop. approx. 15) situated within the much larger Findhorn Ecovillage and Community. The site is compact (one acre) but includes; a 64m2 polycarbonate polytunnel, plenty of outdoor growing areas, a communal yurt for Wwoofer/guest accommodation, workshops and gatherings, outdoor kitchen for communal meals, wood-fired pizza oven, a shared laundry, and a flock of ducks. Soillse is designed to operate without fossil fuels. Heating is by biomass district heating and there is an 11kV electrical connection to Findhorn Wind Park. We accept volunteers from May through September. Ideally, we would like someone to come for at least a month but this is negotiable. The Wwoofer opportunity is for 1 person to work in our gardens, including the polytunnel and the outdoor garden as well as caring for the overall site and communal garden spaces. Their accommodation would be a spacious 20ft/3.2m yurt with adjacent bathroom and composting toilet. We provide food staples for self-catering and an allowance for buying food. Some meals will be offered by residents and, of course, you can harvest as much as you like from our bountiful garden. Soillse members enjoy cooking, foraging, and preserving. We utilise some Permaculture as well as organic and no-dig gardening approaches. Our dream is to create a vibrant, fun, efficient, low-maintenance, integrated growing and living system. We are in our eleventh year of living on-site. Soillse is 5 minutes walk from the beach, through woods and sand dunes. It is within the renowned Findhorn intentional community which has a rich social and cultural life with events such as Open Mic, 5 Rhythms, traditional dancing, singing, yoga, art and pottery classes meditations. and performances in the Universal Hall. The community has its own wholefood shop, café and pizzeria. And there's a communal hot tub. A short walk away is the traditional 300 yr-old village of Findhorn, which has shops, pubs and cafes. It is flanked on one side by Findhorn Bay and the other by the beach. My time at Soillse can only be described as blissful. I had the most magical time helping out in the garden, living in the yurt, and becoming part of the Soillse community this July. Findhorn Ecovillage is a very unique place, surrounded by dunes and woodland and filled with many lovely, welcoming people, it has stolen my heart. The events I attended and friendships I made brought me into the community and made me feel part of the place. Most special of all was the connections I made as a woofer with the people in soillse. The communal Friday dinners serve as a connecting and lovely tool to bring everyone in together and I loved having little chats with people in the garden as we worked. I shared many beautiful meals and conversations with the other people living at Soillse and felt very welcomed into the community despite only being there three weeks. Each day working in the garden was very rewarding and I found the quiet, methodical work to be very calming. Christopher (the head gardener) and his incredible wealth of knowledge and expertise seemed to be an endless well I could draw from when I had questions! Graham was a good communicator and helpful throughout the whole process . You will meet some very kind, caring, and interesting people here who come from all walks of life. I would highly recommend this place to anyone, it is truly special.
