In the winter we need a couple of physically fit people to help with stock fencing repairs, tree removals, stone wall repairs and shrub cutting jobs. If this is you, please apply straight away.
April-July it’s mostly about sowing, planting and growing vegetables, herbs and flowers and weeding.
All year around the hens, cattle and cats need looked after.
On this magical hebridean island find our biodynamic farm (40acres) with a small herd of rarebreed Shetland cattle, hens and ducks, two cats, and the two of us.
There is a large vegetable garden ,a medicinal herb garden, orchard, polytunnel, 5 woodlands. 14 years ago there was only, what is sometimes called, a green desert. Over-grazed by sheep, no trees and very little bio-diversity. Every winter I plant trees, well over 10,000.00 by now.
The farm is totally transformed into a haven for wildlife, productive and a joy to spend time in.
There is always plenty to do here. Weeding, scything, haymaking planting, cutting down, walling, fencing, harvesting, processing , baking, milking, compost making, BD preparation stirring and spraying. And much more. The island has a choir, a ceilidh band, art group, a cafe, a shop,/post office, a church and a primary school... all welcome visitors.
Organic methods: Bd preparations and no heavy machinery is used. Closed herd and flock. Minimum intervention. Homeopathic and herbal treatment for animals if needed. Ridge composting using only own materials. Seaweed from the shore every winter.
Certifications: Biodynamic certified
Spring and early summer work: Weeding, sowing, planting out, watering, more weeding. Applying the biodynamic preparations and composting. Milking the cow. Birthing calves. In June or July, making hay is urgent. Foraging for wild foods and seaweed and exploring the island, wild swimming. The weeds and the grass are prolific and weeding is ongoing, topping rushes and pulling thistles in the field is a fun job, as is pruning and trimming branches and trees. A little grass mowing and filling potholes on the road. The house needs attention with carpentry projects too. Some of the fences need repairing and the dry stone dykes sorted in places. Socialising with other islander, filmnights and celidhs. Music making. There is no TV. You have your own helper’s kitchen and cook for yourselves all food is provided
The helping schedule depends on the weather and jobs needing done. In the summer 5 days a week Monday-Friday 9-5. In the winter 10-4.
If you can help with any of these jobs and you like the look of our farm then get touch.
