*Fully booked for the rest of our available dates - only taking 2027 bookings* Crofts 22 is situated on the historic island of Great Bernera and connected in a growing community dedicated to regenerative farming. Friendly and eager to expand our reach we are excited to welcome WWOOFers to the island. Connected to the main isle of Lewis via a bridge, Great Bernera is 45 minutes away from the biggest (and only) town on Lewis where the ferry will dock from Ullapool. A beautiful and wildlife enriched island that has a lot of prosperity to offer in its crofts which is what we are aiming to showcase. Croft 22 is owned by the Higginbottom's, Nat and Julia and our chickens, guinea fowl, ever growing flocks of Boer goats, blackface, Hebridean and the odd Shetland sheep. We live on our croft in our van with our collie and sheepdog in training, Åse, and are dedicated to protecting and living amongst the biodiversity of their land. The accommodation is in a glamping tent with shower and cooking amenities nearby on the croft. The tent has a large bed, seating and a wood burner in the colder months. There is an office space which can be used in the evenings with a sofa and computer and lunch and evening meals will be communally held. There are other crofters nearby that focus on landscaping, tree planting, barley rearing and upkeep of the land so together there are plenty of jobs to be done and skills to be learned across the island and there may be opportunity to visit them during your time here. Our core goal which is to croft not only for the land but for the future. There are the daily essential jobs on thecroft which include, watering plants, feeding sheep and chickens. The sheep have a lot of upkeep and potential experiences like shearing, hoof clipping and moving which can be exciting and useful new skills for any woofer to try their hand at. If animals aren't your thing…don't worry! There's plenty of experiences and tasks such as cultivating and maintaining an organic orchard, learning about soil restoration and the sowing and winnowing of beer barley. All work done on the croft is an opportunity to educate and practice sustainable farming. WWOOFers can learn the practical applications and importance of things like degrowth, regenerative agriculture and other subjects that respect our natural resources. A monthly calendar is generated to help keep the work aligned with changing seasons and the most demanding tasks eg: lambing and harvesting seasons. Additional Woofers also have the option to pitch tents, campervans on the croft if desired. Food is of course always provided and available for visiting WWOOFERS, facilities open and available for cooking and preparing food for any specifications or diet restrictions. Morning coffee and biscuits are out for that sunrise boost, and you can almost always guarantee a warm bowl of hearty soup with as much cheese as you desire! We generally work a 4-5 hour day for 5 days a week and there is a daily task of feeding for an hour each day on the other days. On your off time and on the weekends, the isle of Bernera and indeed, further afield has a lot to offer to anyone coming to stay. There are 6 day a week busses and you are welcome to use the car locally if you have a valid license. Stunning beaches, breathtaking moorland walks and amazing wildlife such as sea eagles, seals and dolphins. The famous Callanish stones are only 20 minutes away and a must see for any island visitors. We look forward to hosting you in 2 week periods.

I felt truly amazed and inspired during my time WWOOFing at Nat & Julia’s Croft, especially by the way they design and run everything from a regenerative and permaculture perspective. Julia mentioned that we remember the land longer than we have forgotten it, and I couldn’t agree more. This includes things like knowing the names of clouds, understanding the wind and rain, and working with animals and plants in a reciprocal way. I also really appreciated the landscape of the island. The vast skies, constantly blowing winds, and ever-changing light made the sea look a different colour every day.

Nat & Julia are absolutely friendly and loving! We had a extremly good time! They had really lovely animals, goats (very weird and funny), sheep (so cuddly), guineafowl, Chicken, and of course the excited and loving dog Åse. There isn't any welcome as warm as the welcome from the Croft here! <3 Most times in the morning we decided what we will do, that was nice. The weather was windy and rainy most times, but thats what made it so cozy up there - we also had some sun for a few days, which was quite fun. We highly recommend this Croft to stay at it was fabulous!!! Noa & Leonie

I can't begin to explain how special croft 22 is. Nat and Julia are hosts who truly care for you. They make you feel as if you're not a mere wwoofer, but an important part of the project. We worked on one big project during my stay which was very cool. Despite not having built a goathouse before they took my thoughts and ideas into consideration while we built it. Everything we did was very much a team effort where Nat and/or Julia worked alongside us. Nothing, whether it was having snacks from the pantry or their shop, using certain tools, or being in certain spaces on the croft, was out of bounds. It almost felt like it was my croft too. On our freetime we did lots of things together (even though they would be accommodating if you wanted to do your own thing). We went to the beach, had a barbecue, went to lovely and interesting places on the island.. It was so much fun. I am very grateful for the time I spent with Nat and Julia and would absolutely love to come back. I can't recommend this place enough. Thank you for everything!

I had a mixed experience woofing with Nat and Julia. Their croft consists of two converted shipping containers (one kitchen/storage, one office/bedroom), a canvas tent, and their van. I stayed in the converted shipping container and was very comfortable. Days starts around 8:30am with yogurt bowls, then go into animal feeding, plant watering, and other croft jobs at 9. At 1, we have an hour break for lunch before going back into work until 3 or 4. There is both independent and communal work, often involving sheep. While some communal work went smoothly, there were several times when tensions from Nat and Julia were really high and made group work feel stressful and uncomfortable. After work, Julia often takes woofers to sights around Lewis. Otherwise, late afternoons are free until dinner at 6/7. Julia is a great cook and most dinners last an hour or two around the table in their van. Besides daily entries into the online croft diary, evenings are free with some lovely running/walking routes. In the end, Nat and Julia are a generous couple wanting to share their experience and help woofers delve deeper into their areas of interest. Simultaneously, Croft 22 is a woofing experience that expects woofers to be engaged inside and outside of work hours. At times, this expectation was difficult to manage with my own needs for rest or recuperation after work or on days off. Because of this, I would most recommend Croft 22 to woofers with both high energy, and high social batteries

I enjoyed my experience on [Host] and the helping of the tasks that included sorting wool, moving sheep, harvesting veg, sowing seeds and fence maintenance. Gardening tasks were relaxing and we enjoyed listening to music while doing them. In the morning we usually watered plants and fed sheep, goats and Guinea fowl. They had sheep in a few other fields on the island too. The accommodation was very cosy! Nat and Julia were kind and made sure I was comfortable throughout the stay. I learnt more about crofting and also got the benefit of experiencing the beautiful island, my favourite views being while swimming at the beach.

I had a lovely lovely time at the Croft. I know it has been said before but Nat and Julia are as hospitable and kind as can be. The work was varied, adapted to what people’s interests are and interrupted by many tea breaks and good conversations. I appreciated how they not only share the work, but also their community and ideals with everyone who comes to the Croft. I certainly hope to come back one day!
