Hallo, we're James and Emma and we live with Chloe, a lively medium-sized dog. We started planting a food forest or forest garden in south Somerset 2 years ago. Food forests have several layers of vegetation from the canopy layer down to ground cover, and including climbing plants. We'd love to share our knowledge of forest gardening and wildlife. The food forest is young and we've begun by planting fruit and nut trees and are starting to put in perennial vegetables.
Typical tasks include tree maintenance (weeding and mulching trees), creating paths, weeding and planting perennial and annual vegetables, watering plants, and digging ponds. We will provide tools but you will need wellies/walking boots and wet weather clothing.
WWOOFers will stay in our house, we have spare bedrooms which will be available. Please note you must be comfortable with dogs in order to stay with us. We live about 15 minutes from the food forest and we'll travel together by car. We will cook an evening meal to eat together and often take sandwiches and coffee to the food forest for lunch.
This is a beautiful part of Somerset, with some lovely areas for hiking. It's a 10-minute walk from our house to South Petherton, where I enjoy bellringing and we volunteer at the David Hall, a well-known folk music venue. South Petherton has a pub, bakery, and vegetable shop. There is a daily bus from South Petherton to London and buses to the nearby large town of Yeovil.
