House and garden
Highland
Very small scale organic vegetable production , reduced recently owing to the owners age and health. For 20 previous years producing salads for local hotels and farmers markets.
Situated in the center of the village. Easy access to the hills. Very involved with a local Community Growers group based on a new allotment site in the village.. Opportunities to meet other WWOOFers and visit other WWOOF hosts (3 hosts within 15 miles).
Enthusiastic lighthearted help is needed in exchange for the experience of a vibrant Highland community.
The owner Simon Calder, a very active 82 yr old constantly has building projects on the go.
At the moment only growing in the house garden in the center of Ullapool.
You will be staying at the house in a wooden chalet in the garden and catering for yourself.(At our cost). We share many meals but have found over the years that many volunteers prefer to have their own private space.

Simon and Eileen took us in very spontaneously and with open arms, and we spent tranquil and fulfilling five days in Ullapool with them.
As there was another Wwoofer there, and we came so spontaneously, we were staying on the ground floor of the main house, with our own bathroom, and shared the kitchen of Simon and Eileen. Therefore, we can not speak to the usual wwoofing accomodation, but the bedroom in the house was extremely cosy, looking out into the beautiful garden and over the harbour.
Sharing the kitchen with Simon and Eileen was not a problem at all, we were made to feel at home and shared some dinners and wonderful conversation with them.
The work was in the garden around the house. Our wishes for working hours were taken into account (we wanted to start a bit earlier to have more afternoon). Simon has a unique style of doing things. We were taken seriously with our input and ideas, and learned a lot in the short week we were there, e.g. how to use an austrian scythe, building various constructions to protect or stabilise plants (recycling used materials), planting willow trees and different vegetables.
The afternoons were spent in kayaks we were encouraged to use (no otter sightings despite daily attempts), the great local bookshop (+café), or around the house and garden which are just a beautiful place.
Thank you again Simon and Eileen for the wonderful week and the spontaneus hosting, it was a true pleasure to meet you.
