A 5 acre non-commercial croft with numerous vegetable beds, an orchard, shelter belts with 2 polytunnels and 2 greenhouses to be maintained. We grow fruit, and a wide range of vegetables and sell surplus vegetables.
We have chickens, 2 cows and calf, bees and a cat - have pigs sometimes. We aim to be as self sufficient as possible.
There is not much work with the animals in the summer so work will include planting, weeding, hedge trimming, log chopping, pruning, peat cutting, woodland maintenance, building maintenance projects, and helping us with our holiday cottage changeover when needed.
Magnificent views and a beautiful beach are close by - this is a great place for hill walking, fishing and bird watching. Good home cooking and friendly hosts happy to help those wanting to improve their English or Gaelic.
Other interests: Scottish music, Gaelic, heritage and history, films, politics. Bikes available for wwoofer use. Lifts available to main village of Broadford or Kyle 3 miles away.
We particularly need help each year with wood or peat cutting and collecting to try to reduce our winter fuel bills - this takes place in April/ May to cut, June to turn and July to bring home - so a few strong people, especially in April time, would be really helpful - it is good fun with a good team!
We don't take people under 18 years of age - sorry! We prefer people to stay for 2 week stays.
Organic methods: We are keen composters and use manure and seaweed to feed our garden. We have experimented successfully (with the help of a previous wwoofer) the no dig method in a bed of our garden. We check our vegetables regulary for pests and remove by hand caterpillars etc - we try to be as organic as possible. We eat well on our own vegetabes, fruit, lamb and beef in season.
Certifications: We are not registered as organic but we do use organic methods. It is very expensive to get the organic certification in the Highlands and not easy to get organic food for the animals here so we could not consider registering.
Current projects: In March - seed sowing and preparing ground, April- May planting out and preparing ground and sowing more seeds plus cutting peat for the fire, July and August weeding + August, September and October there will be tidying and cutting back shrubs and plants, digging the garden for the following year, wood cutting, hedge cutting etc.

Sometimes we have maintenance work such as painting or woodwork and we also have a cottage to clean and changeover the bedding each week from March - September.
