Crofting work at various locations on the Isle of Skye with Highland cows, sheep, bees, dogs, land management, small building works- tiny house, sauna project, fencing, tree planting, workshop tidying. A car is needed as the accommodation is 40mins drive from the croft. FOOD I make a big lunch every work day and good coffee but otherwise no food is provided - the coop supermarket is a just a mile away. WORK I ask for three full days help (daylight hours only) per week and the rest of the time you can explore or chill at your leisure. ACCOMMODATION In your own private room in a shared 6 bedroom house, wifi, heating, hot showers, kitchen, and good view from the living room over the sea and mountains. If you're a couple then great - if you are two individuals or a group then no bother as there are 4 spare bedrooms at the moment with two long term students staying who are studying on the local Outdoor Adventure course. AVAILABILITY Preferably stays for at least a fortnight but flexible. You'll be helping me, Cheryl, 36, a former teacher and now full time crofter. Strictly no smokers, its a great time to give up here and have a wee detox. You must have excellent English, unfortunately I'm rubbish at other languages and love a chat so while it's not a deal breaker, its best if you are pretty fluent. BACKGROUND/CONTEXT I look after a croft in Broadford where I rent a house (where you'll be based) and also have a croft in Portnalong where I am building a house of my own and live in a static caravan …and have just taken on a big croft in another part of the island with 200 sheep. We will travel between the the places as animals and jobs in each so you’ll get a good experience in lots of different parts of Skye, but based in Broadford which is the second largest settlement in Skye so lots of amenities for a rural location. JOBS Jobs include: tree planting, general tidying, shed organising, painting, gardening, fencing, drystane walling, bracken crushing, potato cultivation, raised bed building, woodshed building (then filling!), tree pruning, animal husbandry, helping with the cleaning, mucking out, seaweed gathering etc LOOKING FOR I really like meeting like minded folk and have hosted lots of travellers with different nationalities, backgrounds, and stories. LGBTQ+ friendly and always impressed when folk read a full host profile and can reply using the code-word 'Tomato' somewhere in their response. My first degree was in English Literature and now I find myself full time on the land so know first hand how life takes you on round about journeys - BUT - have had plenty folk come and 'help' but haven't quite removed the rose tinted glasses of romanticised visions of brushing hairy cows in the sun. ITS GOING TO BE COLD, WET, SHITTY, and HARD WORK. But it is an honour to work the land and get stuck in. If you are still on your journey building personal resilience then maybe hold off on messaging. If you think the earth is flat or that crystals have special healing powers then good luck to you, but maybe this isn’t the place you are looking for. But. If you are a handy kind of person who wants more practical and varied experience in small-scale agriculture then send over a message. Over 20 year olds only please.

My stay with Cheryl was so wonderful; I’ll hold the memories of my time here so fondly. Cheryl is generous, patient, knowledgeable, and passionate about what she does: all qualities I find so valuable in a host. She’s got a great sense of humor about her which is always refreshing during a day of physical work. She made sure I was looked after so well during my stay, and the food she cooked for lunch and dinner was always so delicious! The work we did together was varied and included: fencing, feeding (sheep, cows, and pigs), dry stone walling, general tidying, and a whole lot of ‘moving things from one place to another,’ the backbone of all good crofting work! I also did a couple tasks on my own, mainly to do with painting pieces of equipment during particularly rainy days. The work challenged me physically, but was never too demanding (think shoveling for a couple hours at a time, digging invasive weeds, carrying bags of feed or pieces of equipment, moving planters, and similar things). Like Cheryl says in her description, it is MUDDY, so be prepared to get stuck in and embrace the muddy delights of a day’s work! The accommodations were very comfortable. I had an apartment to myself: bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, and sitting room with a great view. It was well equipped, cozy, and warm. Cheryl and I would stop in at to the nearby Co-op on the way back from the day’s tasks if I ever needed any supplies or provisions for breakfast foods or snacks. Highly recommend!

We had a really fun wet & windy week at Cheryl's, starting with the roof of her new house blowing off in a gale so our first task was retrieving & dismantling that & securing everything for more wind. Other tasks included helping feed her majestic Highland cows, playing with the gorgeous pigs & giving them heaps of seaweed to wallow in, helping with insulation in the new house, helping with airbnb changeovers & coppicing hazel for hedge laying. Cheryl's a fantastic, chatty & knowledgable host & we felt really welcome and comfortable... great lunches huddled in the caravan, loads of cups of tea and a cosy airbnb chalet all to ourselves. We'd love to come back again and see how you're getting on with everything! thanks so much from both of us xx

I really liked my stay at Cheryl's farm. Skye is a very beautiful island with mountains, the sea and a lot of discover for outdoor people (climbing, canoeing, hiking, celtic dancing). The cabin/house was super luxury. It was clean, I had a lot of space and a lot of good food. Cheryl was an awesome host. She was intelligent, funny, very energetic and tried to make me as comfortable as possible. I really appreciated that she thought so much of my dog Kira and tried to involve her in the work while I also felt that Cheryl was trying to find interesting jobs for me (involving livestock) and I did learn a lot about Scottish farming. She also had a very friendly handling with her animals, and therefore they have been pleasantly calm. I definitely recommend staying at Cheryl's farm.

I spent two weeks at Cheryl’s place and can only recommend it! Cheryl was easy to communicate with and always cared a lot about the wwoofers well-being. She‘s a person full of positivity and has always been open for a good chat or tips what to do on the island. She also offered us to take us to various places on the island to go on hikes etc. . The Isle of Skye is a magical place with it‘s stunning nature. Working was always a joy as we always have been in a beautiful surrounding haha ;) The tasks Cheryl asked us to do were various and good to manage. The Wwoofers stayed in a cozy house with everything you need! I would love to come back to Broadford at some point :)

I just spent two weeks at Cheryl and Stephen's. Two weeks that will for sure remain engraved in my mind for the rest of my life. As winter was coming, Cheryl adapted her instructions and gave us a few jobs to do in the changing weather. Tidying the polytunnel, reorganizing the shed, painting the new window frames of the cottage... Although we also worked outside a few times and helped her (as best we could haha) removing the old fences, rebuilding the stones walls, planting willows and blackcurrant for the upcoming year, collecting seaweeds... All these various tasks participated in making this stay quite an adventure, and a personal enrichment above all. I rarely had encountered such an amount of generosity, natural kindness and light. It was my first wwoofing experience. Cheryl made me looking forward to do it again...
