We are a family with 6 children (ages 4, 7, 11, 15, 18, 21) who are home educated &/or flexi-schooled. (Please only apply if you really like children!) Matt works as a counsellor from the studio in the garage, & Carole as an energy healer. We also do short break fostering occasionally. We are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints & attend church in Dunfermline most Sundays - thus Sundays are our day off, & our WWOOFers are free to use the day as they wish (we can sometimes give a ride into Dunfermline). Also we don’t drink coffee, tea (other than herbal tea), or alcohol. As we have young children we expect our visitors to use clean language. Our house used to be a nursery school & since moving here in 2019 we’ve been working on the house & garden to make them more eco-friendly & so that we can live with more resilience, & more regeneratively, in line with permaculture principles. We have various vegetable & herb beds & fruit trees, a wildlife area, & a greenhouse. We participate in a food surplus scheme & pick up food from a local supermarket to distribute in the community a few days each week. We have found we need our wwoofers to be willing to help out with housework & meal prep & clean up in order to make sure there is time for the garden projects (without causing children & housework to take a back seat!). We also have lots of plans - we will be building a lean to greenhouse on the south side of the house, with a climate battery beneath it, we want to start a community seed exchange library, & begin a community garden on land next door to us, & build a cob wood-fired hot tub. We are just a few minutes walk from the train station, & from the library, leisure centre, shops & also Cowdenbeath Market Garden (also run on permaculture principles). We are close to Dunfermline, which has lots of historic buildings, and not far from Edinburgh. Organic methods: Mulching, companion planting, nettle plant food, Certifications: Not certified because we’re only growing for ourselves Current projects: Climate battery & lean-to greenhouse Maintenance & improvements to garage & shed Community herb beds Community seed library Improving food storage facilities in the house General renovating & decorating Liaising with the council to get permission to begin a community garden on land next to us Educating the kids & running home ed groups Future projects: cob wood-fired hot tub Host community workshops on eg willow weaving, herbs, permaculture .... We had to leave a bit earlier than planned for personal reasons, but Carole was super kind and understanding. The house was full of life and had a really warm, welcoming vibe. I didn’t manage to do much, but I helped with a bit of garden tidying. The WWOOFer room was lovely — cosy and peaceful, with a beautiful sunrise view. Thanks so much, Carole — we really appreciated the time we had there!

I spend a wonderful time with Carole and her family in the[Host]! Carole and her family have always been extremely uncomplicated an welcoming. We spend most of our working hours maintaining and enhancing the Garden, whilst there was also lots of time for freetime activities. The kids were also incredibly kind and funny. Would definitely come again!

Staying with Carole and her family was the perfect first WWOOF experience for me and my teen daughter! Carole and Matt were incredibly generous and welcoming. We had our own room with bunk beds and a sink, vanity, and clothing storage. Meals were delicious and casual. We learned so much about how to have a garden from the projects we were given. When we were done for the day, we had time to roam Scotland and see the sights. We especially enjoyed spending time with the family, getting to know them, and attending church and activities with them.

I had an amazing time with the Sneddon's in the Old Schoolhouse! Carole and Matthew were very welcoming, generous and open-minded. For work I gardened and helped with construction tasks. This included pruning trees, raking leaves, the building of a new greenhouse, making raised vegetable bed covers, and putting up wire fencing. When I wasn't doing these tasks I was helping around the house and spending most of the time with the lovely Sneddon children. For me this didn't feel like 'work' at all as the kids were an absolute delight, full of energy, creativity and character. I was generously invited to family outings and community events, all of which were a blast and great cultural experiences too. I couldn't have asked for a warmer family to stay with during the Scottish winter!

I spent a week in good company with Matt and Carole's family, discovering lots of new things and being in contact with them was a great personal enrichment as it's very different from what I know. I was able to follow their activities and the rhythm of their lives, the meals, and I did a bit of gardening, sorted bricks, sharpened garden tools and drew with the youngest girls, who are very funny and full of imagination. Very welcoming, I adapted quickly, the dog Ruben is adorable, and I also loved visiting Dunfermline. The warmth of a home, the coolness of the nights haha

This was our first WWOOFing experience and it was great! We felt welcome right away by the whole family. We were invited to take part in every part of the family's activities including mealtimes, hanging out together in the evenings around the cozy fire, good chats (about all sorts of things), playing and creating with the kids, working side by side, as well as invites to go with the family when they went somewhere; we were treated like part of the family. We love the work that is happening at the Old Schoolhouse, the emphasis they have on benefitting their community as well as their projects which focus on upcycling and decreasing or making good use of waste. We were able to help with a project building a shelf which will help distribute food to those in need. We also got to learn about the medicinal uses of some plants and how to process them into salves. We helped prepare some used building materials to be reused for future projects. They were easy going and open to listening when I presented ideas about the projects. We enjoyed spending time with the dog, the bunnies and the quail as well. It was a very memorable week for our family.
