Native Tree Nursery in the Scottish Highlands
Highland
Our Farm is nestled between mountains in the beautiful and wooded Glen Beag, about 5km from the village of Glenelg, on the northwest coast of Scotland. We run several different business from the farm, including an organic microbrewery, forestry operations including sawmill and firewood production, tree nursery and holiday accommodation. We are also working to rewild and increase woodland cover around our glen, making the area richer in wildlife and more resilient to climate change. In total there are 9 people living here: 6 adults and 3 children (as well as a dog, a cat and 14 hens), forming a small community who work together to keep the farm running.
Accommodation is in a picturesque wooden cabin, affectionately known as the 'Yerba Loca'. It is basic, but comfortable and consists of two bedrooms (a double and two single beds), kitchen/living area, hallway and storage area. Heating is from a small woodburning stove (firewood provided). There is a toilet at the adjacent brewery and shower available in the office building a short walk away.
During the summer season, we require WWOOFers to help in our native tree nursery, as well as from time to time growing vegetables in our polytunnels. Nursery tasks vary from sowing and pricking out seedlings in the spring, to seed collecting in the late summer, and lots of weeding and watering in between! It's a great opportunity to live in a beautiful part of the West Highlands, while learning about tree growing, horticulture and running a small farm in the modern world.
We primarily need help during the months of April to October, with preference given to those who can commit to at least 3 weeks with us. A good level of fitness is required and some previous experience of gardening is helpful but not essential. In a typical day we start at 08:00 and finish at 13:00, with WWOOFers usually free in the afternoons for exploring the area/leisure time.
Glenelg is a small community of around 300 people on a remote peninsula in the West Highlands. The village - easily reached from Corrary Farm in 25 minutes by bicycle or 10 mins by car- is in a stunning location, enjoying panoramic views of the Isle of Skye looking west and south down the Sound of Sleat towards the isles of Eigg and Rum. It's a very peaceful place, but there is a thriving community here, especially during the summer season from Easter to October. During these months, a community-owned car ferry takes tourists and locals across the Kylerhea narrows to Skye, there is excellent food and music at the Glenelg Inn and frequent events throughout the summer at the village hall. The Glenelg Shop is open all year round and has a good supply of essential groceries and local produce. The farm surrounds two of the best preserved 'Brochs' - Iron Age castles - in Scotland.
Other local landscape highlights include: the Sandaig Islands, a beautiful archipelago of small islands and white coral sand beaches, also the former home of 'Ring of Bright Water' author Gavin Maxwell; Arnisdale and Corran, a tiny community of houses at the very end of the road, overlooking the wild and majestic mountains of Knoydart; Bein Sgritheall - our highest local mountain and only 'munro', offering unrivalled views over Skye, the Small Isles and the Outer Hebrides. Glenelg is also an excellent starting point for adventures to the neighbouring areas, such as Torridon, Applecross, Ben Nevis, & Glen Coe and the Isle of Skye.
Many of us live here for our love of mountains and wild places. The area has almost unlimited possibilities for outdoor sports. At Corrary, there is a group who swim in the sea most mornings and we also enjoy running, cycling, rock climbing and sea kayaking.
Getting here: Our nearest airport is Inverness, which is about a 2 hour drive away. Edinburgh and Glasgow are around 5 hours by road. There is a direct bus (Scottish Citylink) from Glasgow airport to Shiel Bridge, from where we can collect you. From Inverness, you can take a train to Kyle of Lochalsh station, about 1 hour drive away.
We all look forward to meeting you and welcoming you here!

I really enjoyed my time at [Host] Farm. The work was varied (e.g. seed collecting, tree packaging, weeding) and I learned so much about native trees. Everyone at [Host]Farm was incredibly welcoming, and I would definitely love to come back!

My husband and I had a fantastic WWOOFING experience! The work was really interesting and we learned so much about raising native trees. We were able to participate in several different processes including: seed collecting, transplanting seedlings, and berry and Bog Myrtle harvesting! Rowan and the entire crew were fantastic to work with, the accommodation was super cozy with everything you need to cook meals, and the work/free time balance was just right! We definitely recommend this WWOOFING experience and are planning to come back for a longer stay!!

We had a lovely stay at [Host] Farm. All the team was very nice !
Regarding what we did during our wwoofing, it was mostly tree planting, weeding, seed collecting and watering in polytunnels. We were working in the morning until 1:00 with a coffee/tea break at 10:00 and we had all the afternoons and weekends off. Perfect occasion to go swimming in the river nearby or in the sea, hiking on the hills, cycling along the coast and so on... The team was happy to lend us some bikes and also to give us advice on what to do during our free time. It is good to know that wwoofers live on their own house, cook their meals and go groceryshopping by themselves (there is a little shop in Glenelg in which the farm has a tab).
So if you love trees, good beer and want to enjoy the northern part of Scotland, this is the perfect place to go :)
Thanks to the team for welcoming us for those 3 weeks !!

It’s been such a pleasure to spend time and work at Corrary Farm. Rowan was incredibly dedicated to making us feel comfortable, always working alongside us with patience and a genuine willingness to share knowledge—never without a good laugh. Time flew by, and I truly wish I could have stayed longer. I definitely recommend staying for at least three weeks, preferably more. The location is a little paradise, with plenty to explore and a strong, welcoming community to connect with.

My partner and I had a lovely time at Corrary Farm! We had a great variety of jobs during this time ~ including tasks like seed collecting, wood stacking, cleaning, weeding, tree packaging and our favourite hazelnut husking :) our month went by so quickly and we were surrounded by lots of lovely people. The Yerba Loca was very cosy and super well equipped. Rowan and the team were very well organised and very communicative which was well appreciated. We hope to visit again one day ~ we miss it already!

Corrary Farm was our first WWOOFing experience and we loved it. We had been traveling for several months and we broke our trip to get our hands dirty.
We were made to feel very welcome by the whole team at the farm and there are a few. Each of them had different responsibilities and areas of expertese and that meant our tasks were many and varied. We loved the morning coffee break, end of day beer at the Brewary, access to fresh vegetables and a cosy but rustic home.
We loved the ideas that were being expressed at Corrary farm- the rewilding with indigenous plants of local provenance and locally generated renewable energy. We loved what they are doing and we loved how they are doing it!
We were welcomed and made to feel valued.
