Smallholding with raised beds, orchards, small woods, and diverse flock of laying hens (11)
Wiltshire
OUR PLACE
Our home is a Georgian farmhouse with 7 acres of land, including a pasture, an orchard and gardens. We now have 11 chickens, we're growing food (organic no-dig raised bed system), have set up composting, and planted 30 new trees to add to the collection of 10-15 trees on site with plans for small-scale cider and apple juice production. The new trees include apples, pears, plums, cherry, walnut, hazelnut inc 15 cider trees of 5 varieties. We're making organic fertilisers using a number of methods including fermentation.
ACTIVITIES
Gardening, grounds work, projects such as building compost bins, fencing, harvesting, woodland management, making ponds and other conservation activities, we are developing an educational offering and so looking at the infrastructure and setting around that.
A TYPICAL DAY
Orchard tasks (depending on season), chicken support, compost management (inc building wormery). Other activities onsite are sowing, planting, weeding, raised beds, herb gardens, watering, pruning, maintenance, equipment cleaning, cooking, and tidying tools.
AROUND THE FARM
There are lots of local walks, we have a 3-year-old son so tend to be doing outdoor stuff a lot. We are 30 mins from the historic city of Bath, 7 minutes to the transition town of Frome and close to a number of other attractions, and sites of historic or cultural significance (Glastonbury, Stone Henge etc)

Our time here was fantastic! Our 1st time in the UK, Wayne and Eleanor made it such a lovely transition with ensuring we experienced the local sights and food. Wayne was very energetic and enthusiastic about his farm utilising permaculture principles around it. The flock of chickens were very sweet and lively, one of the girls decided to lay deep in a bush. Once we discovered it, we found she had laid 13 eggs over a period of time! We were able to help with creating a new hot compost, putting up an electric fence around the chicken coop, chook care, cutting down hazelwood, making tree guards from the hazelwood, collecting apples, blackberries, harvesting corn, courgettes, green beans, peas, bay leaves and so much more.
No two days were the same as Wayne made the time enjoyable with different projects and tasks and it went by too fast. Our Accomodation was lush, in our own self contained restored oasthouse, with our own shower, toilet, cooker, TV and a comfortable bed. We would definitely Come back here as they made us feel right at home. Thanks Wayne and Eleanor!

I had a great time with my Wwoofing experience here, Wayne and Eleanor were very accommodating and welcoming from the get go.
I did lots of great work that involved, sewing seeds, watering, planting in their raised beds and even harvesting. It was really useful to learn about 'No dig' gardening, Organic methods and Wayne is very knowledgeable and a good mentor.
I also enjoyed helping out with chickens, orchard care and much more.
I really felt part of the family and I am very grateful for the whole experience and I highly recommend to anyone who is interested in gardening and organic living etc.

Wayne and his family were wonderful hosts. I felt immediately welcomed into their beautiful home and grounds. Wayne has a wealth of knowledge in regenerative agriculture and systems which he was generous to teach and mentor. the work on the land was creative and flexible and fulfilling. I enjoyed my time at Huntenhull so much.
