Organic mixed farm on the Scottish Border.
Northumberland
1. Describe your project, your place, and its inhabitants (including animals):
We have a 344 hectare farm which has been run as an intensive farming business since the 1970's. In 2021 we turned organic and now practice regenerative farming.
We have 55 ha of woodland of which 36 ha were planted in the past 2 years. In 2022 we sowed 157 of grassland to prevent soil erosion; 107 ha of flower rich seed mix to provide habitat and foraging sites for invertebrates and birds; 6.5 ha of bumblebird seed mix to provide food resources for farmland birds and nectar feeding insects; and 8 ha of wild bird seed mix to provide food resources for farmland birds in winter. During the summer around 700 sheep graze the grass.
There are 17 residential properties here occupied by 28 people, as well as a number of listed traditional stone farm buildings dating from the 1860's. We have plans to renovate these and bring them back to life.
I live in the farmhouse with my Jack Russell terrier while my son lives in another property on the farm. We're keen to meet WWOOFers and hear about their lives. I have hosted before and found it very rewarding. I'd like WWOOFers to stay for 3 or 4 weeks. At the end of the first week there'll be a review to ensure that the arrangement is working for everyone.
2. List the activities that WWOOFers will participate in and what you want to teach them:
WWOOFers will participate in a variety of activities around the farm. Most pressing is the need to keep unwanted weeds under control which we do by hand since we can't use chemicals.
There are a large number of plastic tree guards across the farm originally used to protect newly planted hedges and trees from deer. Some have been in place for 20 years or more and need to be removed.
Our listed buildings need considerable maintenance which consists of repainting woodwork, repointing stonework as well as replacing downpipes and guttering. There is also quite a lot of general work to be done clearing out and tidying outhouses and buildings.
There is forestry tasks to be done as well as fencing, helping in the farmhouse vegetable garden and occasionally moving sheep. There will also be an opportunity to help carry out bird counts and wildlife surveys around the farm.
We would like to teach WWOOFers about an alternative way to farm which works with nature rather than against it.
3. How will you feed and house WWOOFers? Please describe your accommodations and plan for meals:
Accommodation is in the farmhouse which is a large stone house with 7 bedrooms. Above the garage is a bedsit with a kingsize bed, lounge area, small kitchenette and shower room while there are 2 other bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms in the main house.
Breakfast, lunch and the evening meal will be prepared and eaten in the farmhouse kitchen. If weather permits we occasionally eat outdoors.
4. What could a WWOOFer's day look like at your site (time slot for participation in activities, expectations...)?
At 8am WWOOFer's will meet me and a staff member to discuss the day's activities which are weather dependent. If it's raining we'll find an indoor activity. That might be painting guttering and downpipes which we're currently replacing around the farm. If the weather is fine that might mean setting off to a nearby wood to remove tree guards. At 10am there'll be a 30 min. break for tea/coffee, taken in the farmhouse if we're working nearby or provided in a flask if not. Tasks for the morning ends at 1pm when we head off for lunch.
The afternoon is free for WWOOFers to do as they wish. At the farmhouse there's a swimming pool, tennis court and snooker table for entertainment. Around the farm are plenty of pleasant walks. There's a footpath to Cornhill-on-Tweed, our nearest village, which is 2km away. From there you can catch a bus to Berwick upon Tweed and then a train to Edinburgh.
5. Play the guide! Talk about your own hobbies (music, cooking, etc.) and those possible around (hiking, swimming, etc.):
North Northumberland is a very picturesque area. There are fantastic sandy beaches just over 20km away, as well as numerous castles and stately homes to explore. Edinburgh and Newcastle are only 45 minutes away on the train.
There are many beautiful walks in the area. The Northumberland National Park is within easy reach with it's many hectares of rugged hills and stunning countryside. Walking is a great interest of mine so I can point you in the right direction.
West Learmouth runs down to the River Tweed which is the Scottish border. Scotland is just a short walk away. You can catch the bus west to the Border towns of Kelso, St Boswells and Galashiels which are steeped in the rich history of the area.

I had such a lovely week at [Host], the farm was peaceful and had many beautiful walks to go on. It was nice to be out in the open air first thing in the morning planting trees, so the work felt quite rewarding. Jas was such a kind host, she made us delicious vegetarian meals and all of us spent time after dinner watching tv or playing board games. She also drove us to town and a nearby waterfall so we could explore the area more. I hope to see the farm thrive and the biodiversity flourish in the coming years and would love to visit again sometime.

Jasmin is a lovely host who made our first WWOOF experience absolutely fantastic. She cooked really delicious meals for lunch and dinner. Our favourite was the mushroom tacos!. We also spent our evenings watching shows and playing games with her (and her adorable dog Rue).
The farm itself is beautiful with many scenic walks. In our free time, we enjoyed strolling towards the nearby town and Jasmin even drove us to a really cute Scottish town nearby. The farm's location in the borders makes for a really interesting history, which we enjoyed hearing about from Jasmin.
The working hours and tasks were more than manageable. We spent our stay planting trees and working on hedges. The farmer we worked with was also really friendly and helpful! Highly recommend the experience :)

This was my first experience as a Woofers and I was sooooo happy with how it turned out. Jas is a wonderful host: we had amazing meals, great conversation and she would always bring us with her on trips to nearby town or hiking path. I spend 3 perfect week, the work was very fair and changing.
I would totally recommend spending time a west Learmouth.
Hope to hear from Jas and Roo again.

My time at Jasmine’s was absolutely fantastic!
Jas is extremely knowledgeable and kind. She tries to make everything perfect for you and has a lot of energy and vision for future projects.
The farm itself is a huge place perfect for long walks and observing wildlife.
The work is never too much and you actually have energy to do something with your afternoon. There will also be a coffee/tea break ;)
From the nearest village (20min walk) you can easily get a bus to Coldstream, Kelso or Berwick on Tweed, and Edinburgh and Newcastle aren’t far off either.
Often Jas might give you a lift somewhere and will show you nearby tourist attractions such as Alnwick castle or Flodden field.
Jas is an amazing cook, who puts a lot of effort in the meals. I got to know a lot new vegetarian recipes!
Although you are always welcome in various places in the huge, beautiful farmhouse you also have your privacy with your own very large ensuite room/ apartment that is unlike anything I have experienced before while wwoofing.
I would definitely recommend West Learmouth and would love to come back for future projects!

It was incredible!! Jasmin is lovely, she's a great cook, she's really funny and very interesting. The tasks are really fun (even raking the grass :) ). The farm and the surroundings are nice too. We took the bus several times to visit towns and castles and to buy clothes at the charity shop in the village (which is the best I've ever been to).
A quick note about Rue, the adorable dog.
Thanks for all, Jasmin. See you soon.
