Daisy Farm is a mixed smallholding producing organic cider.
Nottinghamshire
Hello WWOOFers,
I am Sam (female) and I live with my husband (Jono) and our 3 year old son at our beautiful home. Our Farm is a smallholding in Upton, Nottinghamshire, with an ecological twist to produce food for our table and cider for sale to the public. We are organic producers who work with nature to create a sustainable approach to everything we do. Encouraging wildlife to make the Farm their home, we see and hear rabbits, foxes, goshawks, buzzards, tawny owls, barn owls, hundreds of smaller birds and various small mammals including bats!
We also share our space with some permanent residents including our border collie: Connie, Sully our Sulcatta tortoise, 8 breeding ewes who live amongst the orchard and honeybees (depending on if they stick around)! We also sometimes have weaner pigs and chickens, depending on the time of year and success of keeping away the foxes/goshawks (for the chickens).
A typical day starts off and ends with tending to the needs of the animals; walking the dogs, checking on the sheep, tortoise etc and making sure they have food, water or are safe and sound for the night.
Days on the farm will vary according to the season for example:
January - February: Apple tree pruning and chipping, Racking of the cider.
March - April: Lambing and bottling cider
May: Various sheep, veg plot work, grounds maintenance
June: Veg plot work, grounds maintenance.
July-August: Unavailable
September - October: Apple harvesting, cider making, lambs/pigs to abattoir
November - December: Unavailable.
I (Sam) work full-time as a Professor at a local University and Jono is on the farm with our son but also an on-call (retained) firefighter (when our son is at playschool).
We have a four-bedroom farmhouse. As a WWOOFer you would have a double room and share our bathroom, kitchen and lounge. We would welcome a couple if you were happy to share a room and double bed.
We eat breakfast (around 07.30-07.45am) and evening meals together (times vary from 5.30pm - 8pm) without screens! We appreciate help in getting food prepped, cooked and clearing away. We do have quite a busy schedule that includes our son's bedtime routine and evening farm tasks so evening meal times in the week are a little varied. However, WWOOFers have access to the kitchen and are welcome to prepare meals independently (or help by preparing ours too). We are not foodies - we prefer to make sure that any food we cook is eaten and sometimes this means we batch cook and will have similar meals on repeat throughout the week - or freeze for later down the line.
With our 3year old, we cannot guarantee you a full-night sleep, but we can guarantee a happy family home that we will welcome you into and usually include you into the family and friends gatherings if they are on whilst you are here (if you want to).
My husband and I met through climbing and still love to get out to the Peak District for hiking or climbing when we can. This has been made slightly less likely since we moved to the farm and had a child but we attempt to head out if the weather and days off align.
We are also very active and enjoy going to Crossfit. However, we spend the majority of our time working on the farm which is very physical and means we are outside in all weather - so we'd recommend bringing warm clothing, waterproofs and wellies/boots.

I had a lovely week at [Host] Farm. Sam and Jono were welcoming, very kind and great company. My room was clean and the bed very comfortable. There was no shortage of great food. The work was good, honest toil with plenty of free time. I have no hesitation in highly recommending a stay at [Host] Farm.

If you want an experience where you are met with hospitality, respect, and appreciation, [Host] Farm is your place. Sam and Jono made me feel welcome and at home from the moment I met them. We got a good chunk of work done in the orchard, cutting down dead trees, propping up leaning ones, and removing stumps. Some other odds and ends jobs got done as well, but the work to free time ratio was a square deal, and my stomach was always full 😊. I highly recommend. Thank you Hattons!

I learned so much about keeping an orchard, caring for sheep, and English family life while at [Host] Farm! The small scale operation is a great introduction to the world of locally produced goods. Southwell is a lovely town, and Sam and Jono are thoughtful hosts who made sure that I maximized my time in this beautiful part of the country.

I’m really grateful to have met Sam, Jono, and Jaxon. They made me feel like part of their family, and it was so comfortable staying with them. Most of the time I worked with Jono, and there were different tasks everyday, like taking care of the sheep and lambs, building the floor, painting, and cleaning the stables. Jono was always patient and explained everything clearly, so I never felt confused. When it was not that busy, I loved relaxing in their beautiful backyard playing with their two dogs! This experience will always be a cherished memory for me. I hope I can come back soon(during apple season)!

Bonjour,
