Hi 👋🏽 I’m Jen and me and my young son have a little croft (like a small holding) in the northwest Highlands of Scotland.
We have a very sweet dog called Milly who comes everywhere with us and some very happy hens live on the croft.
We are very lucky to have this croft and want to share it with local people and visitors. It has a wide diversity of beautiful habitats and the views are incredible.
I am very slowly making progress but I need practical help as, with a young child and a day job , progress can be slow.
I am, by profession and passion, a naturalist and biologist and I can teach wwoofers all about the local landscape, wildlife and culture. I am a born and bred Highlander and have a very good overview of life here past and present should you want to learn about real life here (not the Scotland sold to tourists).
I am an enthusiastic grower of food and aim to make the Croft productive enough to provide fruit and vegetables for local people .
There is no average day but in terms of a rough schedule, 2 hours in the morning 10am-12pm and then 2-4pm where there might be planting, watering, weeding, tidying, seed collecting, making growing beds, composting and bracken bashing, biodiversity monitoring, feeding and cleaning out hens.
I particularly need people with practical skills to help this year.
- There is a new polytunnel that needs finishing touches to its structure and a watering system installed
- A caravan needs stripped and clad and fixed up OR demolished!
- I would like help to make an honesty box for putting any Croft products in to sell.
-cutting back bracken
- seaweed collection
- In April I hosted a women's carpentry course and I need to continue the projects started for that and tidy the site.
You will often need to carry out activities without me there for much of your stay as I will be at work. I will direct your day and come and work with you when I can.
Our house is 20 minutes drive away 16miles/27km from the croft in the lovely fishing village of Ullapool. It only has one bedroom so we cannot accommodate you there unfortunately but hope to invite you for an occasional meal.
Accomodation on the Croft is our friends' old campervan or your own tent or small camper van.
Please be aware that we have annoying little flies called midges through June, July and August! A good repellent to bring is called Smidge. There are also ticks around so you should bring a tick twister to remove any that might bite you.
There is a compost toilet on the Croft and a basin with a water container for washing dishes and hands.
Meals- unfortunately my capacity to provide meals for you is not great with a child by my side and work commitments. I will provide a welcome box with some meals and basic cooking elements. Cooking will mostly be done by yourself on a small gas camping stove. When I can, I will provide meals at the croft or invite you to our house.
Water - there is a small burn (stream) that runs down the croft to the sea loch. It has the neighbours grey water going in to it so is not suitable as drinking water. You could boil it. I will provide containers of drinking water for you from my tap at home.
I have some eggs from our 5 hens to share with you on some days…..depending on how they lay.
The Croft is very beautiful. There’s a hill to climb behind and the croft goes right down to a sea loch where you can swim. On your days off you can go a bit further afield to sandy beaches and bigger hills if you have transport. There are some lovely river swimming spots nearby too.
Ullapool has nice eateries and a harbour with boat trips and a ferry to the Hebridean island of Lewis.
I can speak some Spanish 🇪🇸
My little boy understands German
He is also learning Gaelic
Please over 21 years old only and ideally two people together.
