Get involved with life on a mixed farm in Mid Wales
Powys
I'm Owain, I'm 32 and live near Llanwddyn in rural Mid Wales. I've recently moved back home to take on the family farm. I have spent the last decade travelling and working in different aspects of agriculture. I've done a lot of workaway/woofing around the world, and so it's exciting to be able to host WWOOFers here.
The farm is just over 100 hectares, mainly for sheep and beef cattle production. It's classed as an upland farm, so includes a variety of flatter productive ground, to rough moorland. I've continued on the flock of Welsh Hill Speckled Face sheep that my parents kept here, they're a rare hill breed and native to Mid Wales; I think it's important to keep them here as they are part of the landscape and history. The cattle are another native hardy breed; the Welsh Black. Also on the farm are 2 Mangalitsa sows that rotate around the woodland blocks.
My plan for the farm is to implement a holistic and regenerative approach, a lot of my time currently involves adapting the infrastructure to manage the grazing regenetively. Moving the stock on to the next paddock is generally a daily task, easy enough with the help of Bill the sheep dog. I'm also practising organic methods as I think it goes hand in hand with regenerative farming. I've got plans to start a market garden which should tie into the mixed farm system.
The tasks will vary greatly depending on the season and every day is different. I'll be able to teach woofers about regenerative principles, and many aspects of animal husbandry; from shearing sheep to handling cattle and pigs. I'm hoping to have some chickens soon to add to the mix. Occasionally I'll be doing some butchery and processing which I'm happy to teach if woofers are interested.
As well as the livestock work, there is always maintenance of fencing, woodland and buildings to do. I've got plans to build a butchery and smokehouse in order to process meat on the farm, but right now it's more emptying old sheds and bringing things up to date. There are other diversification projects on the cards as well, like building accommodation huts, and hydro power generation from the stream. I am into heritage crafts and skills, so I'll try to practice as much as I can on the farm; whether it being hedge laying in the winter, and timber frame repairs to the old barns.
All main meals will be provided, cooking lunch and dinner duties will be shared. Every woofer will have their own private bedroom in the farmhouse. Here there is also a shared living room and kitchen and WiFi. I'm also living in the farmhouse so the household duties will be shared. Given the nature of mixed farming and our produce, I'd prefer to host people who are flexible with their diet as we do eat meat that we rear on the farm, although exceptions can be made, and we can discuss this. I am happy to take people to the nearest shops or amenities if you need anything. Food and cooking is an important part of the farm; using the produce we grow and forage from the landscape. There's a selection of instruments for volunteers to play for anyone into that. I'm always keen to learn about peoples stories and their culture so the hope is to create a fun place to learn, work, and enjoy life on the farm.

I had a fantastic week on Owain's farm! Owain and I had discussed how I could be most useful, and I enjoyed working on all different aspects of the farm! I worked with the sheep, did some tidying up jobs, and visited a livestock market with him! And clearing brash with the machinery! Mealtimes were a great time to talk and share ideas and life stories. I had plenty of time in the afternoon to explore the local area - everything around the farm is breathtakingly beautiful! I learned so much from Owain over the week because he is so fascinating, and has such an interesting future for the farm. I will definitely return to Owain's farm as I had such a great time! I cannot recommend this WWOOFing experience more highly, you will learn so much from Owain and feel welcomed and appreciated!

Despite having no prior farming experience, I’m so grateful to Owain for making my experience worthwhile! Owain always went above and beyond to ensure my curiosity for farming gets explored by teaching / showing me anything I’m open to learn. I especially loved seeing and working with the animals such as the pigs, sheep and cows. The family farm is so beautiful and peaceful with the most breathtaking lake nearby, loved seeing Bill the farm dog in action and to meet your lovely family. Owain was also so open and helpful to my personal project i’m currently working on.
Thank you for being so kind, thoughtful, open, patient, sharing your in-depth knowledge on farming, replying to my last minute request so quickly and for sharing your hidden talents such as the impressive piano skills and for cooking delicious and organic meals :) Thank you also to your dad for the sheep sheering and weed cutting experience, it was a pleasure to work with him too. It’s an experience I will always remember!
I hope to be back with my boyfriend soon and to see the progression on the many projects you have planned! Owain is a great host with many opportunities on the farm, it’s definitely a WWOOFing experience you don’t want to miss out on.
