We are an organic hill farm in Highland Perthshire, running sheep and cattle on challenging but beautiful land. Our main focus is traditional hill farming, with around 900 sheep and 20 cattle, and we are fully certified organic through SOPA. Alongside the main work, the farm includes a diverse mix of hedgerows, woodlands, wild areas, pigs and chickens (kept for our own use) guinea fowls (for eating ticks), and a productive garden with flowers, herbs, and lots of berries. The farm is family-run — we’re a couple with two young children. My husband is the main farmer, and I’m a veterinary surgeon with a particular interest in sheep health and sustainability. I also work part-time on a PhD in sustainable sheep farming in the UK, so life is full! We keep a number of working sheepdogs — currently 10 adults and 3 puppies — and beside working and trialing them, we also do sheepdog demonstrations for tourists. Dogs are a big part of our family and therefor we want them to get enough attention and care which was one of the main drives to look into getting some wwoofers (although keeping 3 pups from a litter sounds like a great idea, it's hard work getting the socialised and giving them individual attention!) Our aim is to farm in a regenerative and sustainable way. Organic certification is part of that, but we’re also interested in biodiversity, soil health, and reducing unnecessary chemical inputs in both livestock and the land. We’re always trying to improve, and there’s no shortage of projects and ideas on the go. We’re looking for WWOOFers mainly because there’s always more to do than we can get to ourselves — especially the smaller, more rewarding jobs that often get pushed aside. Although we are a livestock farm with a lot of animals, the sheep and cattle are mainly on the hill and we leave them alone the majority of the year so unfortunately we can't offer a lot of sheep/cattle work as part of the wwoofing experience. Every day on the farm is different, very weather-dependent and strongly shaped by the seasons. There are some daily tasks regardless of the time of year. These include feeding and caring for the chickens, guinea fowls, pigs, puppies, and cats. Depending on the season, other jobs might include berry picking, harvesting vegetables/herbs, or looking after pet lambs. Beside that we have a list of tasks you can choose from ranging from DIY project, tidying the yard, planting trees to learning young dogs to sit on a quadbike or lead walk, we always try to match tasks to comfort and interest of the wwoofer. We’d love to host people who enjoy being outside, who are curious and want to learn, and who are comfortable working independently at times. Life here is busy and a bit messy, but it’s also full of learning, great views, and fresh air. We’re always learning ourselves — especially in the garden, where we grow a lot of berries, herbs, and flowers, but aren’t experts by any stretch. If you bring knowledge, we’re keen to learn from you too. We value open conversations and shared experiences — we can offer insight into hill farming, organic management, and sheep and cattle health, particularly from a veterinary and animal welfare perspective. WWOOFers stay in a wee flat attached to our farmhouse. We also have a spare room in the farmhouse which is used when we have several wwoofers over. Both rooms have comfortable space and a good view over the farm. Meals are shared, but quite relaxed and flexible — especially with young children in the house, mornings can be a bit chaotic! We try to keep good food around and cook from scratch when we can. Breakfast is usually help-yourself style, with homemade bread (we like to keep it simple — four ingredients rather than twenty), yoghurt, granola, eggs, and other bits available. Lunch is often based around fresh bread and sandwich toppings — we tend to sit together and make something simple. Evenings vary more — sometimes we’ll cook fresh meals, and other times we rely on batch-cooked food from the freezer. When things are busy, soup and bread might be the go-to, but on quieter days, there might be a big pot of pasta, stew or homemade burgers using ingredients from our own produced meat and the garden where we can. We don’t do takeaways or ultra-processed meals, but we’re also realistic about time and energy levels — it’s a balance. We don’t have a lot of spare time, to be honest — the farm keeps us pretty busy — but when we do, we tend to stay close to home. “Date nights” for us often look like putting up a fence together, walking the dogs, going for a hack, or heading out to a local sheepdog trial! We both love being outside and working with animals, and that tends to shape most of our hobbies. We don’t get off the farm very often, apart from veterinary /PhD work or trials, but luckily we live in a place that’s hard to beat for beauty. The farm sits up on a hillside with incredible views over Loch Tay. It’s a peaceful, quiet spot, even though we’re not far from Aberfeldy and Kenmore, which are popular with tourists. The area is perfect for anyone who enjoys the outdoors — there are endless opportunities for hiking, walking, mountain biking, and wild swimming. You can walk for hours within the farm itself, through woodlands, across hills, and down to burns and lochs. Loch Tay is just below us, with chances to swim, paddle, fish, or just sit by the water. There’s also a lot of history in the area — and even on the farm — from old millstones and ruins to traditional hill farm buildings still in use today. It’s a stunning place to be if you like being in nature and don’t mind a bit of mud or mist now and then.

My time at[Host] Farm was a wonderful way to end my WWOOFing adventure in Scotland. Ann and Gert are kind and hardworking people, and I loved getting to know them, the kids, the puppies and of course the cats! I really enjoyed learning to use the AGA stove/oven, and there were also many rewarding outdoor tasks, like fixing fences, removing tree guards and walking dogs. A real highlight was also getting to know the other WWOOFers, from whom I learnt so much. Thank you all!

My time at the farm was absolutely wonderful - Ann and Gert are kind, hard-working, and incredibly welcoming folks who made my week there a great first WWOOFing experience. I learned a lot about hill farming and sheepdogs, the view from the farmhouse is breathtaking, and there’s always a cat or puppy around that needs a snuggle. They were very accommodating of my dietary needs and even made homemade gluten free bread for me! Anyone who has the opportunity to WWOOF here should count themselves very lucky.

I had an absolutely amazing experience on [Host] farm with Ann and Gert. They are unbelievable kind, patient and generous and gave me so many amazing opportunities. The room I stayed in was stunning and the food was always divine. There were plenty of jobs to do around the farm and you were always able to pick what interested you most. I spent most of my days either removing tree guards, helping with the dogs or working with Ann and Gert on bigger jobs. The area is absolutely stunning. I would 100% recommend paying [Host] farm a visit!

I only spent 1 week at Lurgan farm but will keep the memories I made there forever! Ann & Gareth are great host, very friendly and happy to chat & share their knowledge on sheepdogs & sheepfarming. I also really enjoyed the sense of community I found at the farm whenever locals/neighboors came by to give a hand on tasks & chat ; everyone is incredibly friendly & welcoming. As described, the daily tasks include spending time & taking care of the puppies, kittens, dogs, picking eggs, berries, feeding the pigs & the rest of the animals --> Pretty enjoyable & relaxing tasks ! There are also bigger projects available (weeding, garden work, tree guards removal,..) depending on your skills & tastes. I had an amazing time removing nettles in the garden ! The room (& the house in general) is super comfy & the view from the living room is breathtaking ! I really enjoyed the rythm of the farm with early morning & being in bed early (my sleep schedule hasn't been so good in years!). The farm in itself is huge, with so many different areas to wonder in ; fields, forests, hills, even a loch ! So if you enjoy the outdoors, that's a great place to experience it. I would recommand this for independant wwoofers that love animals, outdoors, doing things on their own during the days & socialize during meals. Also, you need to be ok with young kids energy & chaos (although they are really nice) ahaha Thank you so much for everything, I'm so grateful & looking forward to next time ♥
