Woodland Small holding 2 minutes from Porthallow Beach
Cornwall
Hello, we are a family who live on the halfway mark on the Southwest Coastpath. Our site is just up the hill from a small village called Porthallow on the Lizard Peninsula. St Keverne, with a shop, butcher and two pubs is a 40minute walk away. Our nearest town is Helston.
At home, is Jacci (Mum 60), Ed (Dad 62). Myself Phoebe (27) and brother Hector (32) who lives nearby but comes to work here most days . We have one dog on site, Ensay a Bedlington Whippet and 5 chickens. Myself and Hector run Fat Apples Cafe from March-October and a campsite on our 5-acre site. We are visited by many groups and set the business up 13 years ago on a derelict site. We have a small team who work in the Cafe seasonally. Fat Apples is a highly rated Cafe in Cornwall.
When I left School I undertook a Horticultural degree at The Eden Project, and outside of the main Café season Hector and I have been working on restoring our 5-acre woodland. We have replanted areas, added educational spaces for visiting groups, grow edible flowers, herbs and plants to sell outside the Cafe. We hope to develop the growing side of things and also to clear more areas of the woodland to make the site more accessible. You can read a bit about us on our website.
We have lots of projects available for Woofer involvement, so we would try and gauge the interests of each visitor to see what best suits. In general, on sunny days we will be out clearing the woods, weeding, cutting, replanting. Making communal areas like fire pits. There are projects in the Greenhouse, i.e. planting and potting on ready for seasonal plant sales. We may be planting herbs or clearing out the chickens.
In terms of accommodation, we have two options a holiday let called Rose's Loft on the end of our house. It is a newly built and very beautiful 1 bedroom En-suite with kitchen area. You can see this on our website. This is available off-peak times i.e February, March, October. In warmer months, we have Honeysuckle Hut in the woods, a converted gypsy wagon. With access to our campers shower room and the Cafe out of hours. If the Cafe is open you will be welcome to meals in there. We have lots of food available on site as we run the Café and can get deliveries of local produce each day. We usually all have lunch together when the Cafe is closed and will provide all needed for other meals.
2 minutes down the road is Porthallow Beach, I often swim in the sea, snorkelling and enjoy fishing. We have 2 Kayaks on the beach. Nearby is Coverack, a small harbour where there is a pub and fish and chips. It is a nice place to sit in the evening. I enjoy sailing, but mostly we are on-site and enjoy being in the Garden.
