Small croft on Isle of Skye with Highland Cattle, Hebridean sheep, bees, ducks & chickens and more
Highland
We, Claudia & Colin, who have been living here for nearly 3 years, started from scratch, a bare, neglected 15-acre croft in the Northern part of Isle of Skye.
We now have a small fold of Highland Cattle, a wee flock of Hebridean Sheep, Chickens & Ducks and Bees; and of course our border collie, Luna.
We are very proud to breed native cattle and sheep, to produce lamb/hogget meat, eggs and honey and to grow various vegetables and fruits throughout the year.
As a Wwoofer you will learn about daily livestock husbandry, meat production, lambing / calving [depending on time of the year], grazing / croft maintenance including drainage clearing, vegetable/fruit growing incl. seeding / planting / weeding / harvesting etc. In additional we sell our produce locally.
Particularly in February/March strong hands are needed to clear out ditches and field drains and prepare additional ground for vegetable and fruit growth.
However, we hope to learn something from you, too, former experiences or skills you have learned from other Wwoofer stays.
You will be immersed in our ‘croft life’ for roughly 25 hours per week.
You would stay in one of our self-catering bothies [king size bed] and join us for meals at our family table. Vegetarian meals are provided; however no vegan options are available.
The accommodation is optimal for a couple/close friends. Sorry, but we don’t accept pets/animals or children. We don’t have a TV in the bothy, however high speed internet is available.
An own car is of great benefit; however, some transport can be offered.
As we are located on a cliff with views over Uig bay and towards the Outer Hebrides, stunning sunsets, and watching wildlife like eagles are included.
A Wwoofer would preferably stay a week/fortnight. We plan to take a very limited number of Wwoofers every year to have sufficient quality time together.
We live in a very exposed location; its going to be cold, wet, muddy, dirty and hard work but with a lot of laughter and fun.
Organic methods: We use our own manure to feed our vegs/fruits. We check our vegetables regularly for pests and remove caterpillars, slugs etc by hand - we try to be as ‘organic’ as possible.
Certifications: We don’t have any ‘organic’ certification or registration; however we do use organic methods only [no chemicals]. We are planning to become organic registered in the near future; however, it is cost intense for a small croft like ours.

My time with Claudia and Colin on Skye was great. The work is varied and seasonal including morning feedings for the animals and work in the large greenhouse. Claudia’s communication about the work is clear so you always feel like you can make a good contribution. In addition, the bothys are very cosy with a great view out to the sea. All in all I would highly recommend it. A big thanks to Claudia and Colin, I hope to see you again up on Skye oneday!
