Hallo, we're James and Emma and we live with Chloe, a lively medium-sized dog. We started planting a food forest or forest garden in south Somerset 2 years ago. Food forests have several layers of vegetation from the canopy layer down to ground cover, and including climbing plants. We'd love to share our knowledge of forest gardening and wildlife. The food forest is young and we've begun by planting fruit and nut trees and are starting to put in perennial vegetables. Typical tasks include tree maintenance (weeding and mulching trees), creating paths, weeding and planting perennial and annual vegetables, watering plants, and digging ponds. We will provide tools but you will need wellies/walking boots and wet weather clothing. WWOOFers will stay in our house, we have spare bedrooms which will be available. Please note you must be comfortable with dogs in order to stay with us. We live about 15 minutes from the food forest and we'll travel together by car. We will cook an evening meal to eat together and often take sandwiches and coffee to the food forest for lunch. This is a beautiful part of Somerset, with some lovely areas for hiking. It's a 10-minute walk from our house to South Petherton, where I enjoy bellringing and we volunteer at the David Hall, a well-known folk music venue. South Petherton has a pub, bakery, and vegetable shop. There is a daily bus from South Petherton to London and buses to the nearby large town of Yeovil.

We have had a wonderful time with Emma, James and their dog Chloe (don't be afraid of her passion, she is a very affectionate and lively dog). We couldn't have asked more for a first wwoofing experience. Emma and James are a very lovely couple, passionate about plants and insects. We learned a lot about forest gardening and a good technique for scything. The accommodation was very comfortable and we had the chance to taste Emma's very fine cooking (I already miss the desserts). The work/free time ratio was very generous which left us enough time to explore Somerset. Emma even showed us the bell ringing she is practicing too, which was fascinating. We had the opportunity to discover the local art venue and folk bands playing live. Bonus: Emma and James gave us wonderful book recommendations.

I had a wonderful time there, Emma and James are lovely and very patient, teaching you, telling you, what you'll have to do. The field is lost in nature, calm and beautiful. Being honest, as a first wwoofing experience, I loved it. The accomodation in the house is perfect. The village is vey nice too, there is a lot of things going on in South Petherton and the nearby, you'll not be bored there! Do not hesitate!

Couldn’t have asked for a better first wwoofing experience! Emma and James are kind and caring, generous with sharing knowledge. Besides practical work on their food forest, there were great intellectual conversations and inspiring ideas- a very rewarding experience!

Many thanks to Emma and James (and Cloe the dog) for hosting me as their very first wwoofer, I truly enjoyed the time I've spent here. I felt very welcome and cared for, the bed was comfortable, as well as the food (especially the lovely puddings and cakes Emma made) The work in the, still young, food forest was easy to achieve and interesting, Emma and James took plenty of time to explain everything and I learned a lot about the process of creating such a forest. In general we worked a couple of hours in the morning, then had the lunch we brought from home and worked a few hours more after that. There was more than enough time to explore the area during free time. I think Emma and James are very courageous to take on this project and I wish them all the best for the future!
