Former Workaway host. West Highlands resident, but recently moved to lively village. Large garden, needing management. Traditionally planted, many trees, small ponds. Includes some woodland, No pets.
Wildlife regulars include red squirrel, pine marten, badger, and there are also red and roe deer in the area. Many birds.
Plan is to encourage improved habitats for them and for pond creatures. Then to grow organic vegetables and plant fruit trees.
First year will involve mainly clearing overgrowth, checking which wildflowers already present , especially rarer native species such as bluebells; monitoring wildlife; repairing or replacing birdboxes; collecting fallen wood;, creating composter, planting native shrubs as needed. Preparing herb garden, planting out soft fruits garden.
Breakfast foods provided. Usually soup-sandwich lunch, dinner in evening. snacks always available. (This worked with Workawayers of all ages, the more local of whom still visit.) Vegetarian and vegans provided for, though host eats some local fish, and venison.
The first year a room in the house is offered, with a single and a double bed. After that, a caravan or a pod is intended.
There is a septic tank. All cleaning products are biodegradable. ,
Nearby are excellent walks, including mountain-going.
Swimming in sea (8 km), or in nearby freshwater loch.
The single-track road is also on a cycle route which stretches for many miles. A bicycle is provided by host.
Social and cultural events in village. Town (25 km) with museums, music of all kinds is the local hub. Traditional music sessions and ceilidh occur in this and a neighbouring village. Another museum, with guided tours each week in summer around local standing stones and prehistoric tombs is within visiting distance.
I write and edit, and give talks on Scottish history and folk traditions. I read, knit for refugees, and am happy to debate social issues. Good wifi reception. no television.
