New requirement for long term volunteer ASAP. We are looking for a replacement for our previous volunteer who has looked after the livestock for the last year. People who can commit to 2 months or more are favoured. All training given, but enjoyment of working alone is essential. Work during the winter involves feeding out hay/silage to cattle, tending to pigs and poultry and general farm work. Some tractor driving. Experience of livestock is a benefit but not essential. It is hard physical work but really rewarding, and a beautiful environment to work in. Accommodation in a shared house with all groceries provided. There is always a warm, dry place to return to! Our farm has been a very traditional Lake District farm for at least the last 100 years.  I took on responsibility ten years ago, and we are renovating the farm along traditional lines, replanting hedges, mending dry stone walls, bringing back mixed grazing and a sustainable farm business.  We are aiming at financial sustainability, but are not there as yet. Our primary drive is for environmental improvement within the context of feeding people. We have 180 acres on the east side of lake Coniston.  It has half of its land on the hill and half on lower ground.  We have hens, ducks, geese, bees, sheep, cows and pigs.  Also vegetables in the garden.  We host WWOOFers to help with the farm operation and renovation.  Seasonal work includes care of livestock, gardening, fencing, hedging, rebuilding stone walls.   It is physically demanding work, but most volunteers discover the physical and mental benefits of a good day's work done in the fresh air. I have hosted WOOFERs in the past on another farm in Shropshire.  We are happy to host anyone who is prepared to 'have a go'.  Lots of opportunities to learn skills by practically trying them.  We take WWOOFers in groups at certain times of year, accommodation being in a large house, close to the farm - all shared with other volunteers.  I also host single WWOOFers at certain times - but for this you need to be confident working alone. During the summer, especially July and August, I will be looking for WWOOFers who are happy to do plant surveys and hay making. During August the accommodation will be in a barn conversion on the farm. It is a new conversion and consists of a kitchen/sitting room and shower/toilet downstairs, with a single large room upstairs with enough room for 4 single beds. I provide all your food (95% organic) and it is important to me that volunteers all share in this.  It is part of the ethos of the farm that volunteers experience an organic lifestyle, and aim not to support the market of conventionally farmed produce. This is a lovely area to stay in.  We are 1.5 miles from the village where there are many pubs, only half a mile from the lake where you can swim or borrow our canoes, and we have fabulous views if you just want to stay at home.  We expect a good day's work (5 hours per day) for your board and lodging but your evenings and weekends are free to do as you please. If you wish to apply, please provide a full profile, with an explanation of what you wish to get from your experience, so that I can judge if it would suit you. Certifications: OF&G certification Internet access available in your accommodation

We had a really good time at [Host]. Although our experience was very short, we learnt quite a few things about the daily routines on the farm, nicely guided by Holly and in the great company of the other four WWOOFers who were there at the same time as us. Thank you, Holly, for giving us the opportunity to have our first WWOOFing experience. We will certainly do it again!

I enjoyed the time at the Farm. It was an amazing experience. I met nice people at the Farm and Holly is a very kind person. We had always enough food and Holly did a lot of delicious snacks for us. The view from the farm great! We've been many times at the Lake and did a hiking tour in the free time.

We spent around 2.5 weeks at the farm this summer, and it was a truly rewarding experience. Our daily routine started with essential farm chores: cleaning the poultry coop, walking Holly’s amazing dogs, feeding the pig, and checking on the cattle on the remote, hilly pastures. Walking up the hills for the cows quickly became a morning favorite thanks to the great views. The second half of our stay was fully dedicated to the hay season. Harvesting and stacking hay in the barns meant longer hours, hot weather, and hard physical work with a smaller crew. However, Holly truly appreciated our efforts. She gave us extra days off to freely explore the region and additionally treated us to a celebratory dinner once the job was done. Holly’s positive attitude was inspiring—she handled every unexpected farm obstacle with optimism. She also took excellent care of us regarding food, keeping us fully stocked with high-quality organic groceries of our choice. The only downside was the accommodation. We stayed in a bungalow, but upon arrival, we had to buy cleaning supplies and give the kitchen and bathroom a thorough scrub, as previous housemates hadn't kept up with cleanliness. Overall, despite the initial cleaning hiccup, it was a fantastic and valuable experience. Holly is a wonderfully supportive host, and we highly recommend this farm for an authentic WWOOFing adventure!

I had a really lovely visit to Holly's farm, staying for just 10 days and carrying out the morning rounds for the ducks/geese/chickens, pigs and piglets, and the cattle. Holly had warned me that it was a busy time for her and would not be around a lot, but in such a picturesque place and with lovely animals I was very happy to just get on with it alone when needed! I was able to do lots of wildlife watching whilst I did the rounds and finishing in the early afternoon meant there was always time for me to do something afterwards too. On the days when Holly was there, she was always happy to answer any questions I had about the farm and I felt I learned a lot. On one of the days, the heifers in the lower field managed to escape and so helping to herd them back home was a really interesting and enjoyable experience (plus they were very well behaved!). I stayed in the bungalow in the village with two others, though they had different jobs/duties and so were not involved in what I was doing on the farm. Holly was very generous in providing lots of organic food for me to cook, as well as a loaf of fresh bread she had just made and eggs from the farm. Thank you for a wonderful time in the Lakes!

I spent 3 weeks at Holly's farm and it was a wonderful experience. Holly laugh a lot and is very joyful, she loves her animals and her life in her farm. She is very welcoming and take time for I understand her because my English was not perfect! We took care of animals in the morning, plant survey but also hay making, gardening ( I discovered the joy of take off brambles ;) ). She wanted we would have a great time at the farm and asked us if the work happen well! The accomodation was simple but very nice. We had very delicious organic food to cook! We were 4 woman and the vibe between us was very nice!!! I am very grateful about these 3 weeks, to live in this beautiful area, very close to the lake and the farm life was very peaceful! Thanks you so much :D

I couldn’t have wished for a better 1st Woofing experience! I was looking for a place to get a first hands on experience in farming, learn manual skills and discover the Lake District landscapes. [Host] Farm was the perfect place for all of this. Holly is always very eager to share her skills and knowledge about the history of the farm and traditional farming practices and is just a lovely person to chat with! She provided us with the best ingredients and cooking with the other Woofers was always a great moment. As Woofers, we had a very nice routine, working from 9 to 3, doing some animal-care work (cleaning fences and feeding the pigs, geese and ducks), botanical survey, weeding, DIY and trying out dry stone walling. During my first two days, we did some haymaking which, although it was very physical, felt very rewarding because it was a great experience of teamwork. Once the work was done and whenever the weather allowed it, we would go and have a swim in Coniston water, down the farm. I never got tired of admiring the view from the farm and felt so lucky to be there every day of my stay.
